Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently celebrated the start of construction for the Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District. He called this project a crucial step forward for the social and economic improvement of the entire Karamoja region.
During the event, President Museveni highlighted the significant progress Karamoja has made. He noted that the area has left behind many years of conflict, cattle theft, and disorder that previously stopped any real development. Museveni stressed that bringing peace back to the region has now paved the way for it to grow and prosper. He explained that lasting peace has unlocked major investments in roads, tourism, and business, making Karamoja a vital part of Uganda’s overall economic success.
The President believes the new airport will greatly improve access to the famous Kidepo Valley National Park, a top wildlife spot in Africa. This, he added, will create new chances for tourism and bring in more investors. The airport is set to boost tourism, draw in new businesses, provide jobs for young Ugandans, and open up larger markets for local goods. Already, the project is providing work, with over 1,600 Ugandans employed in its construction.
Museveni also thanked partners and investors from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates for believing in Uganda’s economic promise. He appreciated their recognition of the great opportunities available in Uganda and across Africa.
Ultimately, the Kidepo International Airport is expected to better connect the region, fuel tourism, and kickstart economic activity not just in Karamoja but also in surrounding areas.
