The people of Uganda are mourning the loss of Dr. David Otim-Oyet, a highly respected cancer specialist who dedicated his life to healing. His family has described him as an “iconic son of Lango,” whose passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. Dr. Otim-Oyet, who lived and worked in the United Kingdom for over a decade and previously served in hospitals across Uganda, passed away after a brief illness. His body has now arrived back home in Uganda, where preparations are underway for his final farewell.

Dr. Otim-Oyet was recognized globally for his expertise in cancer treatment and his compassionate approach to medicine. His son, Paul Oyet Otim, currently based in Canada, shared a heartfelt tribute, emphasizing his father’s profound influence both in the international medical community and within his Lango heritage. “Dr. Otim-Oyet was more than just an outstanding cancer consultant; he was a source of immense pride for our community,” Paul Oyet Otim stated. “He served humanity with incredible grace and dedication. Lango has truly lost a giant.”

Paul Oyet Otim also highlighted his father’s deep family roots, noting that he belonged to the Omolo Acol Odyek Onywal Iceng clan and was the son of the late Rwot Paul Oyet, a revered administrator, traditional leader, and religious figure. Dr. Otim-Oyet carried this distinguished lineage with integrity and honor throughout his life.

The burial service for Dr. Otim-Oyet is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2026. He will be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Tegony, located within Iceme Town Council, Oyam North, Oyam District. Paul Oyet Otim has extended an invitation to all Ugandans, particularly the people of Lango, to join in honoring a man who generously shared his knowledge and compassion with the sick, the vulnerable, and the young.

A family member and clan chief, Frederick Ogwal Oyee, reflected on the profound impact of Dr. Otim-Oyet’s life, saying, “We not only grieve the loss of my uncle but also celebrate the rich legacy he leaves behind. May his soul find eternal peace.”
