A revolutionary movement is taking root in the Lango sub region as Housing Finance Bank joins forces with the Union Transport Alliance Uganda to reshape how people manage their money and move from place to place. During a high impact gathering at the Zegans Hotel in Lira City, these two powerhouses unveiled a comprehensive strategy to bring modern banking to the doorstep of every resident while championing a greener future through the promotion of electric motorcycles.
This initiative is a direct response to a significant challenge in Uganda where more than sixty five percent of the population still lacks access to formal banking services. By strengthening its network of banking agents, Housing Finance Bank is effectively dismantling the barriers that have long kept rural communities in the dark. These local agents serve as essential lifelines, allowing mothers to pay school fees without stress, helping farmers protect their hard earned savings, and enabling traders to move funds for goods without the risk and exhaustion of traveling long distances.
Daniel Okello, the Branch Manager for Housing Finance Bank in Lira, emphasized that these agents are much more than just service providers; they are considered fellow bankers who are integral to the bank’s mission of improving livelihoods. To ensure this network remains strong and secure, the bank provided intensive training on how to identify and prevent financial crimes such as money laundering, fraud, and tax evasion. Agents were encouraged to maintain meticulous records and stay alert to ensure their businesses remain safe havens for community wealth.
The partnership reaches even further by tackling the future of transportation. Andrew Vijan, the Regional Commercial Manager for Union Transport Alliance, introduced a game changing financing model for Spiro electric bikes. Recognizing that the upfront cost of technology can be a hurdle, this collaboration allows riders to acquire high quality electric motorcycles through affordable financing plans. This package does not just provide a vehicle; it includes comprehensive insurance that protects the rider, the passenger, and the bike itself, offering peace of mind that was previously hard to find.
These electric bikes are built for the modern age, featuring advanced digital tracking and security codes to prevent theft and monitor performance. To ensure the success of the program, a thorough vetting process is in place, requiring simple documentation like national IDs and local letters of recommendation.
Beyond transportation and banking, this initiative is opening doors for local entrepreneurs. Investors now have the chance to enter the burgeoning spare parts industry with a modest capital investment of only one million Shillings. This creates a full circle economy where the community is not just using the services, but also owning and profiting from the infrastructure.
While the transition to these new systems comes with hurdles such as technical glitches or network delays, the commitment from Housing Finance Bank and Union Transport Alliance remains unshakable. They are focused on a sustainable and inclusive future where every person in the Lango sub region has the tools they need to thrive, build wealth, and contribute to a cleaner, greener Uganda.
