Uganda’s AFCON 2027 Vision Takes Shape: Key Northern Training Hubs Handed Over for World-Class Upgrade, Promising Lasting Benefits and Economic Growth

Uganda is rapidly advancing its preparations to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. Recently, vital sports facilities in Northern Uganda were officially handed over to the UPDF Engineering Brigade, the military’s engineering unit, for a complete upgrade.

The facilities, which include the Pece War Memorial Stadium along with sports grounds at Gulu University and Lira University, will be transformed into top-tier training venues ready for the international tournament. State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, marked this as a significant step for Uganda’s readiness to welcome the continent.

This initiative is part of a broader national effort to develop seven training grounds across the country to international standards within six months. Similar handovers have already taken place in Hoima and Masindi, demonstrating a widespread commitment to improving sports infrastructure. The Lira University facility alone represents a substantial investment of Shs 13.2 billion.

Minister Ogwang emphasized that this investment goes beyond just AFCON 2027. It’s about creating sustainable sports development, nurturing young talent, and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. These new training hubs will also complement ongoing major projects, such as the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium, which is expected to be a central venue for the tournament.

While progress on stadium infrastructure is strong, sports officials have pointed out a critical need for more accommodation. Minister Ogwang urged investors to establish modern hotels, especially in Lira and surrounding areas. He noted that the region will require over 2,000 high-quality hotel rooms during the tournament, presenting a significant opportunity for local businesses in hospitality and transport.

The UPDF Engineering Brigade has confirmed that all necessary funds have been received. This means work can begin immediately to ensure Uganda is fully prepared to host AFCON 2027, showcasing its capabilities and commitment to global sports.
