The Okadameri Clan has a new leader, Major Retired Fred Gawera, who is strongly asserting his authority. He has dismissed claims from rival groups and issued a firm warning against anyone trying to create separate leadership within the clan.
Mr. Gawera explained that his path to leadership was entirely legal and open. He stated that the previous clan head delegated authority to him before moving to Canada. After serving in a temporary role for about a year, a formal election was held. He shared that the clan’s election committee announced the position on the radio, inviting candidates. When no one else applied, he was declared the only candidate. He officially took his oath as leader, confirming his position as the one true Awitong (leader) of the Okadameri Clan.
He sent a clear message that any group attempting to establish a different leadership structure using the Okadameri Clan’s name would face serious legal consequences. Mr. Gawera was officially installed as leader after what clan officials described as a process that followed their clan’s rules perfectly.
Henry Opio Ogenyi, the clan’s First Deputy Prime Minister, made an urgent plea for unity among members. He urged everyone to reject those who seek to divide the clan. Mr. Ogenyi highlighted that conflicts within the clan could have widespread negative effects on their community. He specifically warned that such divisions could lead to issues like intermarriages within the same clan, potentially increasing health problems such as sickle cell disease.
Mr. Ogenyi stressed that leadership cannot be taken by force. He called on all clan members to maintain discipline and protect the good name and unity of the Okadameri Clan.
