In a historic breakthrough, Onekgiu Pius, a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Education (Physics-Mathematics) at the Faculty of Education and Humanities, has been elected the 25th Guild President of Gulu University.
This victory marks another milestone for the Faculty of Education and Humanities, which now produces its second guild president after the late Pastor Joseph Okidi, who served in the 2017–2018 academic year.
Election Results
Onekgiu Pius secured a decisive win with 1,295 votes. His closest challenger was:
Okot Fred Kidega (Faculty of Business and Development Studies) – 1,141 votes
Tumusiime Emmanuel Treasure (Faculty of Business and Development Studies) – 684 votes
Fahad Aziz (Faculty of Law) – 222 votes
Okwir Dickens (Faculty of Business and Development Studies) – 213 votes
A Historic Precedent
The late Pastor Joseph Okidi, a renowned gospel artist in Northern Uganda, was the first guild president from the Faculty of Education and Humanities. In the highly contested 2017 election, he garnered 1,115 votes, defeating his closest rival, Daniel Mbaziira (a third-year medical student) who received 896 votes. Moses Walter Ojoka came third with 521 votes, while Herbert Agetta Okodi trailed with 184 votes. He was officially declared winner by the then Electoral Commission Chairperson, Simon Bikala, at 12:04 AM.
A Fiercely Contested Race
Onekgiu Pius faced a tough battle from the very beginning of the campaign, particularly against Okot Fred Kidega. Both candidates, strong supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), also competed for party backing. Due to internal conflicts within the university’s NRM chapter, no primary election was held.
Despite the intense rivalry, many students have called for unity and cooperation. They urge the two leaders to share ideas and work together for stronger student governance and the overall progress of Gulu University under Onekgiu Pius’s leadership.
