Heartbreaking Tragedy in Kole: Two Young Children Perish in House Fire Suspected to be Caused by Paraffin Lamp, Prompting Urgent Calls for Safer Lighting

In a deeply saddening incident that has shaken Kole District, Uganda, two innocent young children tragically lost their lives in a house fire late on Thursday night. Police believe a simple paraffin lamp may have been the cause of the devastating blaze, which occurred around 8:00 PM on April 16, 2026.

The victims have been identified as three-year-old Amule Melesia and four-year-old Kizza Innocent. According to initial reports, their mother, Ajok Rachael, had left them sleeping inside their home in Teaboke Cell, Aboke Sub-county, with a lit paraffin lamp nearby. She had briefly stepped out to a local shop to purchase food.

Upon her return, Ajok Rachael was met with a horrifying sight: her home was engulfed in fierce flames, trapping her children within. Despite her desperate cries for help, and neighbors rushing to assist, their efforts to rescue the toddlers were tragically unsuccessful. The children’s bodies were later recovered from the burnt structure, sadly beyond recognition.

Police investigators quickly launched an inquiry into the incident, visiting the scene and collecting evidence. A paraffin lamp was found among the wreckage, strongly suspected of having started the fire. Authorities also noted that the immediate absence of neighbors at the crucial moment reduced the chances of a quicker rescue.

This horrific event serves as a stark and painful reminder of the dangers associated with open-flame lighting. Police are strongly urging everyone in the community to immediately stop using paraffin lamps and candles. Instead, they recommend switching to much safer alternatives like solar lighting, which can prevent such preventable tragedies.

North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. He emphasized the critical need for communities to embrace safer lighting options to protect their loved ones. This tragedy is a call to action for all to prioritize safety at home and avoid future heartbreak.
