Paul Mugerwa Receives Decades-Long Prison Sentence for the Cold-Blooded Murder of Esteemed Ugandan Doctor Wilfred Olila, Court Emphasizes Grave Nature of Crime

In a significant ruling, Paul Mugerwa has been sentenced to a total of 60 years in prison for the murder and violent robbery of Dr. Wilfred Olila, a highly respected doctor, university lecturer, and businessman in Uganda.

Dr. Olila was a prominent figure, known for his work as a specialized doctor, his teaching at Soroti University, and his successful business ventures. He was dedicated to his family and community. Mugerwa brutally strangled Dr. Olila, then tried to hide his actions by disposing of evidence and fleeing the area. A post-mortem examination confirmed Dr. Olila died from strangulation.

Lady Justice Sarah Birungi Kalibbala, presiding over the High Court in Lira, delivered the harsh sentence on April 13, 2026. She described the crime as exceptionally serious and planned, stating it deserved a severe punishment to deter others. Even though Mugerwa pleaded guilty earlier and asked for a lighter 30-year sentence, the judge rejected this, finding his actions to be self-incriminating.

Mugerwa’s lawyer argued for leniency, highlighting that he had a pregnant wife, a young child, and had contributed to community projects. However, Justice Kalibbala stressed that these personal circumstances could not outweigh the gravity of taking a prominent life through premeditated violence. She emphasized that Mugerwa needed to be removed from society for a long period.

The 60-year sentence includes 40 years for the murder and 20 years for the aggravated robbery. Considering the time Mugerwa has already spent in custody, he will effectively serve just under 39 years in prison.
