A New Dawn for Lango Farmers: Cultural Leaders Launch Massive Coffee Seedling Initiative to Turn Subsistence into Sustainable Commercial Prosperity

The Lango Cultural Institution is making a significant move to transform the lives of its people by distributing 150,000 special coffee seedlings. This large-scale effort aims to help about 1,000 farming families across the Lango subregion switch from just growing food for themselves to running profitable farms, ultimately boosting their household incomes. The coffee seedlings are resistant to a common disease that affects coffee, ensuring a better chance of success for farmers. The entire project is valued at an estimated UGX 300 million.

The official launch and distribution event will take place on April 16, 2026, at the Lango Cultural Centre. The Paramount Chief, Won-Nyaci Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, will personally oversee this important milestone for the community.

This initiative follows a direct request from the Lango Cultural Institution to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF). Farmers in the region have already been prepared for this opportunity, having received training and registered their interest, showing their readiness to embrace commercial coffee farming.

In response, the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed its support, allocating the 150,000 disease-resistant coffee plants. These seedlings will be sourced from a local nursery in Lira, with agricultural officers on hand to offer crucial technical advice to farmers.

Counsel Patrick Okwir, the spokesperson for the Lango Cultural Institution, highlighted that this support is a crucial step towards helping farmers move from basic farming to becoming successful producers of valuable crops like coffee. He urged clan chiefs to guide their community members through the process, ensuring everyone benefits from this promising project designed to lift families out of poverty and into prosperity.
