Nine people have been shot dead and at least ten others wounded after a brutal armed attack on a tavern in a township near Johannesburg, in yet another incident that underlines South Africa’s long-running struggle with violent crime.
According to police, a group of about twelve armed men stormed a licensed tavern in Bekkersdal in the early hours of Sunday morning. Witness accounts indicate that the attackers arrived in two vehicles, jumped out, and immediately began firing at people who were inside the bar.
The gunmen reportedly did not target specific individuals. Instead, they opened fire on anyone within reach and continued shooting wildly as they fled the scene, leaving behind bodies, injured patrons, and scenes of panic and devastation.
The attack happened at around 1:00am local time, a period when the tavern was still operating legally. Emergency responders rushed the injured to nearby medical facilities, while police sealed off the area to collect evidence and interview survivors.
Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the suspects, who remain unidentified. No arrests had been announced by the time of reporting, and investigators are still working to establish the motive behind the massacre.
This latest shooting has once again drawn attention to South Africa’s alarming levels of violent crime. The country continues to rank among those with the highest murder rates globally, recording about 45 killings per 100,000 people according to recent United Nations crime data.
The Bekkersdal tragedy follows a similar incident earlier this month, when at least eleven people, including a child, were shot dead at a hostel near Pretoria, raising fresh concerns about public safety in social spaces.
As families mourn their loved ones and survivors struggle to come to terms with the trauma, pressure is mounting on authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice and to address the deeper causes of gun violence that continue to claim innocent lives across the country.
