A Fatal Road Accident On Kampala–Gulu Highway Leaves UPDF Soldier Dead and Eight Others Badly Injured in Luweero

A tragic road crash in Kalule, Luweero District on Sunday evening claimed the life of a Uganda People’s Defence Forces officer and left eight people injured after a speeding Fuso truck attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre and rammed into a vehicle in the convoy of the State Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Huda Oleru.

The incident happened at around 7:45pm along the busy Kampala–Gulu highway. According to police, the white Fuso Fighter truck, registration UAN 394Z, was travelling from Kampala towards Luweero when its driver tried to overtake recklessly, leading to a direct collision with an oncoming green Toyota Hilux, registration UG 0388D, which was part of the minister’s convoy heading to Kampala.

The fallen soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Moses Edongoto, died instantly at the scene. Police confirmed that six UPDF soldiers and two civilians suffered serious injuries and were rushed to the General Military Hospital in Bombo for emergency treatment.

Savannah Region Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima said preliminary findings point to careless overtaking as the cause of the crash. He noted that all the injured victims and the deceased officer were quickly evacuated, and both vehicles have been towed to Bombo Police Station as investigations continue.

Twiineamazima urged motorists to act responsibly on the road, especially on major highways, stressing that many deadly crashes occur simply because drivers choose to overtake where it is unsafe.

Police say further inquiries are underway to gather more details surrounding the deadly accident.
