Nollywood Actor Odira Nwobu Dies at 43 in South Africa

Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of celebrated Nigerian actor and digital entertainer Odira Nwobu, who passed away in South Africa at the age of 43. His death has stirred deep grief among fans and colleagues across Nigeria and beyond, as many continue to pay tribute to a man whose comedic charm and youthful appearance made him one of the industry’s most recognisable faces.

According to his lawyer and the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, the actor died on Monday while on a work-related trip in Benoni, a town near Johannesburg. Details surrounding the exact cause of his death remain unclear, with a coroner’s report expected soon.

Reports indicate that Nwobu was found in his hotel room struggling to breathe shortly after returning from a night out with fellow content creators. Emergency responders attempted to save his life using a defibrillator, but he was pronounced dead before he could be taken to hospital. His family has not yet released a public statement.

Born in Enugu State in 1982, Odira Nwobu entered the film industry immediately after secondary school, making his professional debut in the movie Joseph the Dreamer. Over the years, he built an impressive portfolio of more than 60 films. Although widely admired for his comic roles, he once spoke about feeling stuck in repetitive characters. This pushed him into content creation, where he thrived and gained a massive following across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

At the time of his death, Nwobu was in South Africa with a group of influencers promoting a Nigerian-owned real estate brand. His lawyer, who accompanied him as part of the delegation, described the news of his passing as heartbreaking, especially since they were still discussing how to inform his family when calls from Nigeria confirmed the tragedy.

In July, Nwobu had survived a road accident that sparked false claims about his death, leaving fans relieved at the time. Sadly, this latest update has now ended in reality rather than rumour.

The actor was not married and had no children, according to reports.

Fans and fellow actors continue to flood social media with condolences and heartfelt messages, remembering Odira Nwobu as a gifted entertainer whose humour brightened screens and whose presence enriched Nollywood.

May his soul rest in peace.
