The Prime Minister (Katikkiro) of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has issued a powerful appeal to the young people of the kingdom. He urges them to act with dignity and avoid any disruptive behavior during the current election period. This important message was shared by his deputy, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, during the Buganda Youth Day celebrations.
The Katikkiro stressed that activities like yelling insults, blocking roads, or causing any harm not only endanger individuals but also damage Buganda’s good name. He reminded everyone that elections are temporary, but the unity and respect for their King (Kabaka) must always remain strong. He encouraged youth to vote for leaders who truly support Buganda and its King.
Buganda Youth Day, held at Lubiri, Mengo, brought together many young leaders, cultural figures, and community members to discuss the vital role youth play in the kingdom’s progress. This year’s theme, “The Youth’s Effort Toward Self-Development,” highlighted various projects focused on helping young people develop their communities and become financially independent.
Amidst rising political tensions and recent incidents of youth involvement in demonstrations, the Katikkiro’s message on dignity and unity was especially timely.
Youth leaders at the event also expressed concerns about political harassment. Derrick Kavuma, the head of the Buganda Youth Council, spoke out against the detention of young political activists and called for justice and their immediate appearance in court.
Prince David Kintu Wasajja, who is the Patron of Youth in Buganda and the chief guest at the event, encouraged young people to take on leadership roles and represent the kingdom’s interests at a national level. He emphasized that Youth Day is a reminder that Buganda’s future rests with its youth. He advised them to stay united, educated, and loyal to the Kabaka, promoting cultural pride, continuous learning, and new ideas for lasting development.
The Katikkiro also praised the creativity and drive of the kingdom’s youth, highlighting the importance of new ideas and personal growth. The Buganda Youth Day celebrations continue to show Buganda’s strong dedication to unity, preserving its culture, and empowering its young people, especially during politically sensitive times.
