Police have arrested a man identified as Joseph Ssebunya, a resident of Nakulabye, Masiiro Zone, after he was allegedly caught trying to set fire to the Kasubi Royal Tombs, one of Uganda’s most treasured cultural heritage sites.
According to reports, Ssebunya was intercepted around 3:00 a.m. after placing a ladder against the perimeter fence of the Tombs. He was found carrying a one-litre bottle of petrol and a box of matches hidden in a black polythene bag.
An eyewitness, Deo Kiwanuka, who was returning home from work, said he noticed the man climbing the fence and decided to approach him. When confronted, the suspect allegedly attacked Kiwanuka, forcing him to shout for help. Residents quickly gathered and attempted to beat the man before soldiers intervened and rescued him.
Later that morning, police officers from Old Kampala Station, led by DPC Francis Liga, arrived at the scene. They examined the area, retraced the suspect’s movements, and took him into custody for further investigation.
During questioning, Ssebunya appeared confused and gave conflicting explanations about his presence at the site and the source of the petrol. Authorities are now investigating whether he acted alone or was directed by someone else.
The Kasubi Royal Tombs hold deep cultural significance as the burial site of four kings of Buganda Kingdom. In March 2010, a massive fire destroyed Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, the main mausoleum, sparking grief and outrage across the nation. Although several people were investigated, no one was ever convicted, leaving many questions unanswered.
Since then, reconstruction of the Tombs has been ongoing under tight security to prevent similar incidents. Officials have expressed renewed concern about the safety of the site following this latest attempted arson.
Police have assured the public that investigations are underway and that the suspect will face charges once inquiries are complete.
