**Lira City, Uganda -** In a dramatic turn of events, Ongom Castro of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has been reinstated as a candidate for District/City Male Youth Councillor in Lira City. The Electoral Commission’s decision, dated November 6th, 2025, comes after a petition filed by Awio Albert Awio, challenging the initial nomination.
According to a document issued by the Office of the Returning Officer, Lira City, the Commission initially directed that Ongom Castro and Odongo Moses be nominated to the City level after being nominated for the Division Youth (Lira East Division). This implied their initial elevation to a higher level, but seemingly led to their eventual removal.
The reasons behind Awio Albert Awio’s petition are still emerging. Initial reports suggested that Ongom Castro’s eligibility was being questioned due to allegations of not being among the 18 members of the NYC Division structure and potential signature discrepancies. Allegations also surfaced claiming that Ongom Castro was acting as an agent for another candidate.
However, the reinstatement of Ongom Castro suggests that the Commission has addressed the concerns raised.
Other candidates in the race include Okori Brian (Independent), Okoro Emmanuel Ceaser (Independent), and Odongo Moses (Independent).
This reversal has sparked jubilation amongst Ongom Castro’s supporters. Mr. Oweta Leo Earnest, his campaign manager, declared, “Lira City cannot do without Ongom Castro…we can’t accept the city to be handed over to political mascaraders!”
Ongom Castro has expressed gratitude to the Electoral Commission for what he believes is a demonstration of justice and equality.
The inclusion of Ongom Castro adds further complexity to an already competitive race. Voters are now anticipating a robust campaign season as candidates vie for the opportunity to represent the youth of Lira City at the Council level. It remains to be seen how the evolving circumstances will shape the dynamics of the election. Meanwhile, also in the ballot is Aceng Faith Holiver for the District/City Female Youth, who belongs to the UPC.
