The Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested two men believed to be behind a growing wave of car parts thefts in the city. The suspects were captured during an intelligence-led operation carried out along Wampewo, Punjan, and the former Electoral Commission stretch.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the targeted zones had become crime hotspots where motorists frequently lost side mirrors, lamps, grills, and other valuable car accessories. He revealed that the operation, conducted on October 23 and 24, followed several complaints from vehicle owners frustrated by the increasing cases of theft.
Owoyesigyire explained that the police operation was aimed at breaking up criminal groups responsible for stealing from parked cars and unsuspecting motorists. “We have arrested two suspects so far, one of whom is believed to be a key figure in the gang responsible for these thefts,” he stated.
During the raid, security officers recovered several stolen items, including Toyota Harrier grills, baby mirrors, side mirrors, and car lamps. Many of these parts were traced to Kisekka Market, a known center for spare parts trade in Kampala.
The two suspects are currently in police custody and will face charges of stealing from a motor vehicle as investigations continue. Police confirmed that more arrests are expected as efforts to completely dismantle the syndicate go on.
ASP Owoyesigyire commended the public for their cooperation and urged motorists to remain cautious, especially when parking in open or isolated areas. “We thank residents for sharing vital information that helps us track down criminals. Our operations will continue to ensure the safety of all road users in Kampala,” he added.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police assured the public that they are intensifying patrols and monitoring crime-prone zones to curb such thefts and maintain peace in the city.
