Gulu University has emerged victorious in the National Inter-University Gender and Human Rights Law Moot (Quiz) Competition beating Makerere University in the final round (260 points MAK – 320 points GULU). The university’s team, comprised of Ochwo John Isaac, Amanya Belinda, and Nakalule Hajarah, put up a spirited fight to beat Makerere University in the final round, held at Makerere University on October 25, 2024.
The competition, themed “Family Law Reform Now! Bridging the Gender Gap in Access to Land as a Productive Resource,” saw four top universities – Gulu, Makerere, Nkumba, and Kampala International University – reach the semi-finals. A panel of esteemed judges, including Justices of the Court of Appeal and Judges of the High Court of Uganda, chaired by Justice Eva Luswata, announced Gulu University as the winner.
Ochwo John Isaac Shines as Best Orator
In a remarkable achievement, Ochwo John Isaac of Gulu University was declared the best orator of the moot competition, showcasing his exceptional skills and dedication to human rights law.
Gulu University’s Rising Giant in Law
Gulu University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Openjuru George Ladaah, expressed pride and gratitude to the Faculty of Law team for their outstanding performance. “This win is a clear demonstration of Gulu University Faculty of Law positioning herself as one of the giants in the country,” Prof. Openjuru said. “Over the years, our students have been excellently performing at the Law Development Centre during their legal practice bar courses, and indeed the Faculty of Law is a rising giant in the country. We are proud.”
Inspiring Aspiring Lawyers
Susan Baluka, Manager of Strategic Litigation at FIDA Uganda, emphasized the importance of inspiring aspiring lawyers in gender-focused litigation to contribute to gender jurisprudence in the court of law, geared towards gender-responsive family law reform.
