A devastating road accident occurred in the early hours of today, October 22, 2025, along the Kampala-Gulu Highway, claiming the lives of 63 people and leaving several others injured. The accident happened at Kitaleba Village, near Asili Farm, at around 12:15 am.
According to police reports, four vehicles were involved in the fatal collision: an Isuzu bus (UBF 614X) operated by Nile Star Coaches, a Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07), a Tata Lorry (UBK 647C), and another Isuzu bus (UAM 045V) operated by Planet Company.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the Nile Star Coaches bus attempted to overtake the Tata Lorry while traveling from Kampala towards Gulu. At the same time, the Planet Company bus, traveling in the opposite direction, also attempted to overtake the Toyota Surf. The two buses collided head-on, resulting in a chain reaction that caused other vehicles to lose control and overturn.
The police responded promptly, transporting the injured to Kiryandongo Hospital and nearby medical facilities. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem and identification.
In a statement, the police urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly when overtaking. “We strongly urge all motorists to avoid dangerous and careless overtaking, which remains one of the leading causes of crashes in the country,” said SP Kananura Michael, CLO/PRO Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety.
The police extended their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a quick recovery to those injured in the accident. An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
