Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among on Saturday evening narrowly survived a road accident when a speeding trailer almost rammed into her convoy along the Kampala–Jinja highway near Mukono.
According to Parliament’s Director of Communications, Chris Obore, the incident happened at around 5:45 p.m. as the Speaker was traveling back to Kampala from Bugweri District, where she had been campaigning for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in her role as NRM Second National Vice Chairperson (Female).
Obore explained that the trailer suddenly swerved into the Speaker’s lane after some of the vehicles in her convoy had passed. The Speaker’s driver acted quickly and moved the vehicle to the edge of the road, successfully avoiding a crash.
Police in Mukono have arrested the trailer driver, 32-year-old Ivan Lubega, along with his co-driver, Amis Waiswa, to help with investigations. The truck, which was heading toward Jinja, reportedly crossed into the opposite lane before the near-miss occurred.
Fortunately, no one was injured, and no damage was reported. Eyewitnesses described the incident as “a very close call,” commending the driver for his swift reaction.
Traffic authorities have since urged all motorists to be more cautious, especially on the Kampala–Jinja highway, which remains one of Uganda’s most dangerous roads.
According to the Uganda Police’s 2024 Annual Traffic Report, the country recorded 22,275 road crashes, resulting in 4,716 deaths and 18,305 injuries. Human error—such as reckless driving, fatigue, and dangerous overtaking—was responsible for over 80 percent of these accidents.
