Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away peacefully on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. He died at 7:35 a.m. in his residence at the Casa Santa Marta in Vatican City after battling a serious lung infection, specifically double pneumonia.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he made history in 2013 by becoming the first Jesuit pope, the first from Latin America, and the first non-European pontiff in over 1,200 years. Known for his humility and progressive views, he brought a fresh approach to papal leadership by choosing to live in a modest guesthouse rather than the grand Apostolic Palace and by making social justice a central theme of his ministry.
