Shaping a Brighter Tomorrow by Empowering Ugandas Young Minds to Overcome Peer Pressure and Embrace a Life of Purpose Discipline and Success

In a powerful move to safeguard the future of the nation, the students of St. Francis Vocational Training School in Dokolo Town Council were recently called upon to take charge of their destinies. During a transformative mentorship session hosted by the Platform for Community Empowerment in collaboration with the Dokolo District Local Government, young learners were challenged to rise above the temptations of drug abuse, early pregnancy, and the poisonous influence of negative peer groups. This initiative was designed to equip the next generation with the mental and moral tools necessary to navigate the complexities of modern life.

Franchise Osika, the Executive Director of the Platform for Community Empowerment, opened the session with a heartfelt plea for students to honor their roots. He emphasized that the bond between a child and their parents is a cornerstone of success, noting that a child’s conduct can either be a source of strength or a heavy emotional burden for their family. Osika further stressed that academic excellence is not merely about intelligence but is deeply rooted in discipline and respect for educators. He painted a grim picture of drug abuse, describing it as a thief that steals talent and closes doors of opportunity. To combat this, he urged the youth to dress with dignity, set ambitious life goals, and remain unshakable in the pursuit of their dreams.

Adding a layer of practical wisdom, Community Liaison Officer Moses Ogwal spoke passionately about the importance of patience. He reminded the students that marriage and family life are serious responsibilities that should only be embraced after one has reached maturity and financial independence. Ogwal highlighted that education remains the most reliable bridge from poverty to prosperity, urging students to stay focused on their books even when faced with difficult circumstances at home. He warned that without a clear vision for the future, young people often fall prey to exploitative relationships with older partners who do not have their best interests at heart.

The conversation also turned to the vital importance of physical health and well-being. Medical expert Ambrose Ogwang provided a sobering reminder of the risks associated with early sexual activity, including the life-altering consequences of HIV and other infections. He encouraged a proactive approach to health, advising students to seek professional medical help at the first sign of illness rather than waiting until a situation becomes critical. Beyond medical treatment, he championed the power of a healthy lifestyle, urging the youth to eat well and maintain high standards of personal hygiene to keep their bodies strong and resilient.

From a spiritual and moral perspective, Reverend Bernard Oribo cautioned the learners against the distractions of romantic involvements during their school years. He pointed out that such relationships often lead to academic failure and unplanned pregnancies that can derail a young person’s entire life path. He challenged every student in the room to make the brave choice today to protect their future.

Closing the event, school representative Apio Minca Sheba expressed deep gratitude for the timely intervention. She called on the students to not just listen to the advice but to live it out every day. She praised the organizers for providing such essential life skills and expressed hope that these mentorship programs would continue to mold the students into responsible, focused, and high-achieving citizens who will lead Uganda into a prosperous future.
