The young minds of Dokolo District have been presented with a powerful roadmap for success as local leaders and advocates step in to guide them away from the pitfalls that threaten their potential. In a move to safeguard the next generation, students are being challenged to look beyond temporary pleasures and focus on the lasting rewards of education, health, and personal discipline.
This vital message was delivered during an impactful mentorship session held at Adwoki High School and Adwoki Technical School. Organized by the Platform for Community Empowerment in coordination with the Dokolo District Local Government, the event served as a wake-up call for learners to take full ownership of their destinies. The mission is clear: to arm young people with the wisdom and resilience they need to navigate a world full of distractions.
Franchise Osika, the Executive Director of the Platform for Community Empowerment, spoke passionately about the dangers of substance abuse and early sexual encounters. He cautioned students that habits like alcoholism and drug use are not just personal choices but are traps that can permanently derail a promising career. He was particularly vocal about the dangers of entering into relationships with older partners for financial gain. These transactional relationships, often involving sugar daddies or sugar mummies, were described as exploitative cycles that trade a student’s long-term health and education for short-term convenience.
The advice extended to the digital world as well. Students were urged to treat their online presence with care, specifically regarding how they use platforms like TikTok. In an era where a single mistake on social media can tarnish a reputation forever, the mentorship drive emphasized that digital responsibility is just as important as physical discipline.
Adding a voice of authority on safety and order, Community Liaison Officer Moses Ogwal reminded the students that true freedom comes from self-control. He encouraged them to stay away from the nightlife scene and to commit to abstinence while in school. By avoiding the allure of nightclubs and premature sexual activity, students can protect themselves from the devastating consequences of teenage pregnancy and early marriages, which remain leading causes of school dropouts.
Health was a central pillar of the discussion, with Dr. Ambrose Ogwang providing essential medical insights. He educated the learners on the realities of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B. His message was one of empowerment through knowledge, urging students to cherish their bodies and make choices that ensure they live long enough to see their dreams come true.
Rev. Sam Omiat, the Director of the Adwoki schools, expressed his deep gratitude for this intervention. He noted that investing in the character and mindset of the youth is the most important investment a community can make. By fostering a culture of focus and high expectations, the mentorship program aims to create a generation of resilient leaders who are prepared to contribute positively to the development of Uganda.
